17 September 2014 : Antarctica – The Next Generation
The 2014 InBev-Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship conference and award ceremony took place at the Palais des Académies/Paleis der Academiën in Brussels on September 17th 2014.The 2014 laureate, Dr. Jan Lenaerts, was presented with the Fellowship by Jean-Jacques Derwael, a renowned geodetic surveyor, for his Benemelt project which aims to investigate how much snow melts on the ice shelves in East Antarctica, by how much that melt will increase in the future, and how that will impact ice shelf stability.During the conference, previous laureates of the InBev-Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship presented the scientific outcomes of their research in the fields of microbiology, glaciology and planetary sciences. Participants also learned about atmospheric science research at the Princess Elisabeth Station. Presentations made at the conference are available from the International Polar Foundation website

In this video, Dr. Jan Lenaerts based at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands) is interviewed after being awarded the 2014 InBev-Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship for his Benemelt project which is expected to provide important insights into how surface melt affects ice shelves. To begin fieldwork on his project, Jan Lenaerts will travel to the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica polar research station in November 2014. He will spend three weeks working on the Roi Baudouin ice shelf.A joint initiative of the InBev-Baillet Latour Fund and the International Polar Foundation, the InBev-Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship promotes scientific excellence in Antarctica and underscores the crucial role polar science plays in furthering our understanding of the Earth and how it functions.
